Data Sheets Of Titanium Sheet Surface Finish

Titanium sheet and plate can be supplied to a number of different surface finishes. The importance of the surface finish is largely determined by the application and closeness to finished state as typically surfaces of products maybe be completed after final fabrication. The common supply state is an annealed mill finish however Yutong Metal can offer various surface finishes dependent on size and supply conditions. The differing types of surface finishes are:

  • Milled
  • Brillant
  • Pickling (descaled)
  • Brushed
  • Blasted – Shot / Sand

Finishing and supply states which result in different surfaces are not explicitly defined in standards and as such are largely dependent on the individual mill and agreements outside of any standards. The ASTM B600 standard is the key standard in providing a guide to the descaling and cleaning of titanium and titanium alloys but does not define the gloss, colour or roughness that a surface should have. The table below can be seen as an approximate measure of surface roughness for each of the processing techniques:

Typical surface Ra (micrometres μm)*Production and Surface Finish Technique
RollingAnnealingPickling (descaled)BlastedBrillantApperance and Notes
4.0 – 7.0HYY  Common supply state for applications concerned with on anti-corrosion and heat resistence.
0.4 – 1.0CYY  Matt, non-reflective finish
0.4 – 1.0CY Y Matt, non-reflective finish
0.1 – 0.5HYY  Commonly sheet and coil finish which is bright and moderately reflective
0.2 – 1.0CYY YPopular polished finish common in food production equipment, Used with grit polished and approx 120 to 150 msh size
0.05 – 0.1CY – Bright   highly reflective surface with a mirror-like appearance with some degree of milkiness to coloration.
< 0.1CYY Y -Mirror PolishA mirror polished finish complemented fine buff rouge this is the highest reflection finish available for titanium sheet.
< 0.5CYY Y -Satin Polishfiner satin polished provides surface with clean cut and good corrosion resistance and common for maritime uses.

Notes on supply

  • Finishes are applied to one side
  • Polished sides are covered in a PE layer
  • Sheets for laser cutting are normally supplied with a finish
